Packaging Guidelines

Dimensions

Helps in selecting the appropriate size of boxes and flyers to minimize inventory and costs.

Weight

Optimize for the minimum strength necessary for the box to guarantee the safety of the item.

Fragile Contents

Helps in selecting the appropriate box strength and optimizing the cushioning.

Product Form

Ensures the need for any special protection required for the items.

Selection of Boxes

Material

  • Use 3-ply corrugated boxes for products under 4kg and non-fragile items.
  • Use 5-ply corrugated boxes for products over 4kg or fragile items.
  • For high-value items (over ₹7000), use tamper-evident boxes.

Key Considerations

  • Ensure the box material can handle the necessary edge crush and burst factor loads.
  • Choose a box size that fits the product’s dimensions—neither too small nor too large.
  • Always inspect the box for holes, tears, crushed edges, and sturdiness. Avoid using poor-quality boxes to ensure the safety of the product.

Size

  • Optimize the box size to fit the product’s dimensions perfectly.
  • Avoid using boxes that are too small or too large. Choose the optimal size for secure shipping.

Quick Check

  • Inspect the box for any holes, tears, crushed edges, or lack of sturdiness.
  • Always avoid poor-quality boxes to ensure the safety of your shipped item.
Selection of Flyers/Polybags
Flyers are a quick and convenient solution for packing flexible items like apparel. They can also provide added protection against external factors such as fluids and tampering.

Material

  • Choose LDPE polybags with 60-80 microns hotmelt glue adhesive.
  • Use tamper-evident polybags for high-value items (over ₹7000).

Quick Check

  • Inspect the polybag for any damages before use.
  • Ensure the polybag is sealed properly after packing to safeguard the item.
Packing of item
Packing an item requires leak-proofing, cushioning, proper placement, and filling any voids in the box. Adequate cushioning is essential to prevent any pressure or loads from transferring to the item.

Material

  • Bubble Wrap : For added protection and cushioning.
  • Foam sheets : To provide extra padding and ensure the item stays secure during transit.
Internal Packing material vs functionality
Leak-Proofing for Liquid Products
Liquid products must be made leak-proof before cushioning or packing. Below are common techniques for leak-proofing:

Material

  • Heat shrink sleeves: To seal bottles securely.
  • Taping of bottle caps: Prevents caps from loosening during transit.
  • Zip lock or leak proof pouches: Provides an extra layer of protection against leaks.
Sealing of Shipment
Sealing ensures that the packed item remains secure and intact inside the box during its shipment journey.

Tape

  • Use Pressure Sensitive Tapes like BOPP (a type of plastic) for strong adhesion.

Sealing Locations

  • Seal the center seam on both the top and bottom of the box.
  • For heavy shipments, use H-Taping by sealing the center seam as well as the edge seams for added security.
Shipment labelling

Essential data

  • Barcode Height: Minimum size 8 mm.
  • Waybill Number & Barcode: Minimum size 8 MIL (1 MIL = 0.2032 mm).
  • Order Number & Barcode: Minimum size 8 MIL.
  • Consignee Address: Minimum font size 8pts, Font: Calibri body.
  • Return Address: Minimum font size 8pts, Font: Calibri body.
  • Retail/Tax Invoice: Ensure its included.

Label Placement

  • Place the label on a seamless, flat surface of the box or flyer.
  • Avoid placing the label near seams or edges for better visibility and protection.
  • In flyers or polybags, ensure all label data is visible and flat.
  • The label pocket in the flyer should be securely taped at the opening to prevent loss.

Additional Tips

  • Readability of the barcode is crucial for faster and accurate shipment processing.
  • Thermal printed labels are strongly recommended over regular labels for durability and clarity.
